What is Going On?
 

On October 18, at 8 p.m. at the beautiful Louisiana State Museum- Baton Rouge the public is invited to watch a live presentation of the entries selected to be in the second annual Uncommon Thread Wearable Art Show. Dancers lead by Micaela Marchand, music by DJ Otto and the Louisiana State University Gospel Choir will visually carry a moving exhibition of wearable art. Three place winners will be announced at the show for first, second and third. Jurors, Loren Schwerd and Cecelia Kane chose both the featured entries and winners from a nation-wide call for entry.

There are many people that go into making Uncommon Thread possible. From the set designer to the dancers, there a many talented locals that make this event worthy of nation-wide participation. Uncommon Thread looks forward to adding this year's participating artists to the list.

Place: The Louisiana State Museum- Baton Rouge

The new museum,part of the Louisiana State Museum system under the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, opened in 2006. The Museum features thematic exhibits on the diverse aspects of Louisiana history, industry and culture. Behind the stunning glass body, the site includes two permanent exhibitions, entitled Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation, and Experiencing Louisiana: Discovering the Soul of America. Topics range from the Louisiana Purchase to Sportsmen's Paradise to Mardi Gras traditions throughout the state. Artifacts include a 48 foot wooden shrimp trawler, a Civil War submarine and musical artifacts from Fats Domino, Buddy Guy, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Aaron Neville and much more.

The outdoor plaza is covered by a 40 foot-high overhang that shelters an elongated pool in which the perfect reflection of the art deco Louisiana State Capitol can be seen. Moves: Micaela Marchand Conor

Micaela Marchand Coner began her dance training with In the Company of Dancers' founder Lisa Hooks Murray at Turning Point Dance Studio. Micaela trained and performed extensively with the Cangelosi Dance Project directed by Kris Cangelosi. She has attended the Jazz Dance World Congress, the Panoply Festival, and most recently studied at ImpulsTanz in Vienna. She has choreographed works for the LSU Dance Ensemble, the Cangelosi Dance Project apprentice group, Baton Rouge's UnCommon Thread Wearable Art Show, and others. Micaela is currently a member of Of Moving Colors Productions, and recently performed in their 20th year anniversary celebration "Luminescence."

Voice: Louisiana State Museum Gospel Choir lead by Everett Parker

Everett Gordon Parker (Director of Gospel Choirs) conducts the LSU Gospel Choir, also known as "The Soul of Louisiana," and a select chorale, Ebony Renaissance. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he received the Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance with a Vocal Minor from Southern University in 1981, state certification in Vocal Music Education in 1989, and the Master of Education degree in Education Administration from Southern University in 2000.

He is a choral protégé of the late Dr. Aldrich W. Adkins, Most Eminent Professor, Virginia State University, and taught preschool through high school choral and instrumental music for 15 years. Over a 22 year span, Parker served as music director for First Baptist Church, Vacherie, LA, Greater New Guide Baptist and Shiloh Missionary Baptist Churches of Baton Rouge, LA. In 1976, Parker served as assistant to the producer, rehearsal accompanist and coach of Baton Rouge's Bicentennial production of Porgy and Bess. In 1996, the LSU Gospel Choirs toured France, playing to sellout audiences in more than five cities, including Paris.
