Introduction to Sweet Tooth

We’d like to introduce you to Culture Candy’s latest confection, Sweet Tooth, a free art criticism publication that provides provocative and thoughtful commentary on the creative world.

Baton Rouge is in a period of rapid growth and with that expansion the responsibility of art to be socially conscious becomes even more important. In the midst of construction cranes and new condos it is imperative to the city’s cultural value to insist that art document our essence. We cannot hope to accurately measure this time by the net profit of a downtown bar or by the convenience of a shopping center it should be the canvas, the dance, the poem or the film that captures this transition.

In that effort the team at Culture Candy has put together a staff of local writers to author essays and editorials on the state of art in Baton Rouge. This quarterly publication comes in the form of a broad sheet that will be designed by a local professional artist. The result is a forum for open critique, as well as a work of art in and of itself.

The aim is to begin a conversation about art between and among artists and the community. Each article in Sweet Tooth will have an online discussion thread at Culturecandy.org. Readers are encouraged to post their reactions to the content in Sweet Tooth. At the end of 2008 we will utilize those voices that responded to be a part of the final issue.

Enclosed is more information about the authors, the project and Culture Candy. Please look over the material to see how you can satisfy your own Sweet Tooth.
